Amiel Maquilan- "A Glimmer of Hope" [MCOM 63 Final]

Amiel Maquilan is a 21-year-old singer/songwriter from South San Francisco, California. He began his musical career as a YouTube artist, publishing covers and original compositions online. Since then, Amiel has been growing increasing popular, traveling to various venues to perform both nationally and internationally. In addition to his music career, Amiel also manages his own small clothing company called FRESH, a brand that he created only a few years ago. Unfortunately, despite his rapid climb toward success, his ambitions for both his clothing brand and his music would have to be put on an abrupt hold.

In November 2012, Amiel was involved in a car accident that left his car totaled and him in the hospital. Although his injuries were minor and he was discharged promptly, Amiel no longer had a car, a vital asset to both his music career and clothing company. Without it, his abilities to perform at certain shows as well as deliver clothing products to customers were curtailed. So he initiated an online campaign using a website called Indiegogo.com, reaching out to his fans around the world, his friends, and his family to help him raise money to purchase a used car so he could resume his normal working life. By the time his campaign expired, Amiel was able to raise approximately $2000 to buy a used car and save his music and clothing career because of the amazing amount of support of the people who care about him. Since the expiration of his successful campaign, Amiel continues to build his music career and is working to expand his clothing brand.

Although the primary focus of my business is photography, I am also capable of recording, editing, and producing high quality videos in order to offer another dimension of services on occasions such as event coverage, music videos or other short videos, and other multimedia projects.

What's Trending- Janina Jakobeit [MCOM106 Final]

Janina Jakobeit, 29, is a graduate student at Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln and is studying internationally at San Jose State University in California. Born in Hamburg, Germany, she later moved to Cuxhaven and then to her current hometown of Cologne. Janina first came to visit the U.S. with her boyfriend in 2008, and later returned to pursue her Master’s Degree in International Marketing and Media Management. She has since studied in southern California at San Diego State, and is currently taking classes at SJSU. During her free time, she enjoys photography, sewing, and anything else that allows her to be creative.

In this video, Janina elaborates on several mass media trends that are ongoing in Germany. She discusses prominent social networks in Germany and how foreign sites such as Facebook have taken over, rendering domestic social media relics of the past. She mentions how businesses and advertisers utilize social media in her country and also gives an example of the negative byproducts such as cyber-bullying (or "cyber-mobbing" as it's known as in Europe). She talks about the trending smart phones in her country and how they influence the ways her "mobile generation" is exposed to mass media. Without using specific terminology from Thomas McPhail's textbook, everything Janina discusses in this video can relate back to one theory or another. From Electronic Colonialism Theory, to Cultural Imperialism, Germany through Janina's eyes is a perfect example and summary of this course's lessons.

Overall, Janina makes the conclusion that many trends in Germany come from the U.S., and summarizes that “[America] runs ahead, and we follow.”
